Vodafone UK sees mid-2004 for 3G launch
November 18, 2003
Vodafone UK is aiming to rollout next generation 3G services in the middle
of 2004. Chief executive Arun Sarin has said the group was preparing to
launch 3G mobile phones in the middle of next year with a variety of handset
models.
"Our major push is planned from mid next year when we expect a wide range
of devices to be available in large volumes," said Sarin.
Operators worldwide have push back their launch date because of a lack
of handset range and network glitches. Hutchison 3G, which has launched
3G service in several countries in Europe and in Australia, has been hit
by a shortage of handsets.
Sarin said Vodafone remains committed to 3G despite launch delays in
many countries and is encouraged by the global economic improvement.
"In broad terms the macro-economic environment is improving around the
world, it's improving in the US, in Europe and Japan," said Sarin.
Vodafone KK, formerly known as J-Phone, is the only Vodafone unit to
have commercially launched a 3G service. The service went live last December
in Japan but has attracted fewer subscribers than its rival's next generation
service. Vodafone KK has less than 100,000 customers while KDDI and NTT
DoCoMo have over 10 million and 1 million subscribers respectively.
