China ready for 2nd phase 3G test
November 19, 2003
China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) plans to involve 6 telecom
operators and more than 12 equipment suppliers in the second phase testing
of 3G mobile technology, the local press reported.
The two current operators in China, China Mobile and China Unicom, and
fixed line operators, China Telecom and China Netcom, will take part in
the trials.
Western vendors are said to include Scandinavia's Nokia and Ericsson
as well as Siemens and Lucent.
The trial will focus on all three 3G technologies, WCDMA, CDMA2000 and
China's own TD-SCDMA. The MII's proposal indicates that all six operators
must conduct test on TD-SCDMA but will have the choice of testing other
standards.
Both China Mobile and China Netcom are not participating in the CDMA2000
trials, while China Telecom and China Unicom are taking part in trials
for all three standards.
China's home-grown standard TD-SCDMA gained momentum last Sunday. The Chongqing
Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, developer of the first TD-SCDMA
based 3G handset, signed a letter of intent with China Putian, the country's
largest telecommunications equipment supplier.
The first batch of mobile handsets is expected to be ready by 2004 for
network experiments and commercially available in 2005.
