mmO2 criticises 3UK service quality
November 24, 2003
mmO2 Chief Executive Peter Erskine warned that customers will have to
wait another 2 years before multimedia 3G mobile phones become battery
efficient. Speaking at an investor conference in Barcelona last week,
Erskine pointed to the defects of their rival Hutchison 3G. Hutchison
launched Europe's first 3G service, named 3, in March of this year.
Erskine said the 3G phones "from 3 still have a hungry battery".
"It is better than the brick they launched originally but not a lot.
Add to that the customer service issues due to network quality and I'm
not saying I'm in the least bit complacent -- but they have a lot to do,"
he added.
In the UK, 3' service has suffered complaints ranging from short battery
life and limited 3G area coverage. Erskine said he would not be surprised
if 3 decided against building out its city network any further.
He also explained that some operators are not launching 3G until second
half of 2004 is because there are no decent 3G handsets with good battery
life.
"The reason why the rest of the industry is launching 3G in the second
half … is the really decent quality handsets which are not battery-life
hungry will not appear until October 2005"
