European Mobile Operator takes over One Million SIM Cards from Oberthur
in First Mass 3G Roll-out
November 24, 2003
Oberthur Card Systems, a world leader in the smart card sector, is supplying
the new SIMphonIC 3G 128 RSA 32-bit card to an European mobile operator
in the first ever large-scale 3G roll-out. The operator was not named.
With the largest memory capacity available on the market today, a powerful
microprocessor and the ability to access a large number of the latest
generation of interactive services, Oberthur’s 3G SIM card will revolutionize
the way subscribers communicate and interact with their wireless carrier
said the company.
“We have cooperated with a leading Italian wireless carrier for the commercial
launch, development and distribution of a high-end SIM card designed for
a very demanding customer base," said Daniela Randazzo, mobile communications
manager for Oberthur Card Systems Italy. "The variety of services an operator
can offer through the card are unprecedented and are made possible by
its unparalleled memory capacity, secure data storage capability and processing
speed.”
The SIM card provided by Oberthur Card Systems is compatible with both
new 3G networks (UMTS/W-CDMA) and current GSM networks. It will enable
access to different services such as info-on-demand and mobile banking
as well as a wide range of web-based content and services.
“Oberthur Card Systems is very proud to be part of the first major rollout
of 3G 128k smart cards in the industry. We will capitalise on this experience
to make our SIMphonIC 3G card the major 3G success for the coming year,”
added Olivier Leroux, mobile communications marketing director for Oberthur
Card Systems.
