Korea set for WCDMA debut in December
November 24, 2003
South Korea is to launch commercial 3G WCDMA mobile service in December
as planned. The service will initially be available in major cities but
there are already concerns over the appropriateness of deploying a second
3G system.
Both SK Telecom and KTF have 3G networks up and running using CDMA2000
1x technology, the rival technology of WCDMA. Despite securing WCDMA licenses
in December 2000, both firms have been reluctant to invest in their WCDMA
networks since launching their CDMA2000 services. Analysts expressed doubts
over the success of WCDMA in the country and that overlapping investments
could damage profits in both firms.
The Korean government offered both CDMA2000 and WCDMA licenses hoping
it would make domestic equipment vendors more competitive in the global
market place.
SK Telecom has expressed doubt over WCDMA services in the past and KTF
found the overall quality of WCDMA services disappointing through its
trial project. The data transmission speed and service quality were far
short of expectations. WCDMA handsets prices are also higher than those
of CDMA2000 handsets which could dissuade potential customers from signing
up to WCDMA.
Korea's dual mobile system is widely criticised by analysts and mobile
carriers. WCDMA service does not show signs of offering anything new or
different CDMA2000 service. There is little reason for Korean mobile users
to choose WCDMA over existing CDMA2000 1x and the more advanced EV-DO
services. The mobile market is also reaching saturation and without innovative
services, it would be difficult to attract new subscribers.
