Vodafone Australia fails to find partner for 3G network
November 26, 2003
Vodafone Australia announced that it will not be partnering any other
mobile operator in the rollout of a 3G network in Australia. The firm
is targeting a launch in 2005 and vowed to invest "hundreds of millions
of dollars" over the next two years.
Over the last few months, Vodafone was involved in talks with a number
of mobile operators to find a suitable partner in building a 3G network
co-operatively. Vodafone Australia managing director Grahame Maher said
other operators prefer to take a slower approach to 3G deployment and
was not prepared to keep up with the speed of the company's proposed roll
out.
"Despite our will to enter into a network partnering agreement, at this
stage we are not satisfied that this approach would meet the collective
needs of our customers, our shareholders, the broader community, or our
business," Mr Maher said.
"3G is the future for Vodafone and quite simply we need to get going."
He did not rule out any partnership in the future.
"The door will however be kept open for other operators to join us in
the future, although no firm commitment has been made at this point,"
Maher said in a statement.
Vodafone had held talks with Telstra Corp and Singapore Telecommunications'
Optus regarding 3G partnership. Telstra Corp and Optus are the top two
mobile operator in Australia. Vodafone is the third largest operator with
around 2.59 million customers.
Hutchison 3G and Telstra are the only operators currently offering 3G
services in the country. Telstra is offering next generation services
based on the CDMA2000 1x standard while Hutchison 3G's service is using
WCDMA technology.
