MobileOne confident of 3G launch in second half 2004
November 27, 2003
MobileOne today showcased a suite of 3G related services over 3G network
as it gets ready for the commercial launch of the service in the second
half of next year. Chief Executive Neil Montefiore is confident the advance
network would be a commercial success.
Video calling, multi-player network gaming and video streaming were some
of the services demonstrated to the media and corporate clients. In one
demonstration, Montefiore placed an international video call to the Chairman
of Vodafone KK Yoshiro Hayashi in Tokyo.
"Overall, I am very pleased with the 3G evolution that we have initiated
that will see M1 customers enjoying a seamless transition from the current
technology very soon, " Montefiore said.
MobileOne will spend between S$200 million (US$104million) and S$250
million (US$130 million) on 3G in the next two to three years, and Montefiore
expects the company to see a return on investment by 2010.
Data services account for up to 15% of MobileOne's revenues and with
the introduction of 3G next year, Montefiore believes the figure would
rise to 25% by 2006. MobileOne experience a very rapid growth in data
services take-up this year. "And if that continues, we really do need
this 3G technology to provide the capacity to carry it," Montefiore said,
explaining that it's a much cheaper way of providing data capacity than
2G.
He added that new 3G services would not be aiming at corporate users
only. Montefiore played down the importance of video telephony saying
that past experiences of the service usually falls short of expectations
but believes video streaming of contents such as football and movie trailers
would make great a service.
MobileOne is the second largest mobile operator in Singapore and has
over 1 million mobile phone subscribers, just over 30% share of the market.
The showcase is available to the members of the public starting from
tomorrow and ending on 14 December.
