Spirent first to certify RF tests for Region 2 W-CDMA

November 17, 2004

Spirent Communications announced its UMTS Automatic Test System (U-ATS) platform has become the industry's first automated solution certified for radio frequency (RF) conformance testing of Region 2 W-CDMA terminals. The Region 2 band, also known as UMTS1900, will be used for initial deployment of 3G W-CDMA in the North American market. Spirent's solution will enable network operators, terminal manufacturers and test labs to automate RF conformance testing, helping to accelerate the deployment of 3G W-CDMA networks and services in North America.

"We are delighted with the 'first-to-certify' status of our Region 2 RF conformance test solution," said Rob Van Brunt, vice-president of product marketing for Spirent Communications' wireless business.

Spirent's announcement comes after 29 tests from the 3GPP TS 34.121 specification were validated on the Spirent U-ATS platform by independent test house 7 layers. The results of these tests were validated for Region 2 certification by the PCS Validation Group (PVG) of the PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB).

ITU Region 2 includes the Americas and Caribbean. Tests for terminals intended for use in this band must first undergo validation by the PVG before they are certified by the PTCRB. The 3GPP RF test cases for the U-ATS system have been verified with several Region 2 W-CDMA terminals from top-tier manufacturers. The validated tests include transmitter, receiver and performance test cases defined in TS 34.121.

The Region 2 capability is available via Spirent's U-ATS Conformance Test System, a comprehensive, fully-automated test solution that runs industry-standard 3GPP test cases for formal RF conformance testing. It includes Spirent's market-leading physical layer performance analysis tools to ensure that terminals are tested under representative real-world conditions. The system is driven from Spirent's TestDrive UMTS test executive software for seamless test configuration and execution without any requirement for scripting or programming.

Region 2 is also supported in U-ATS FLEX System configurations. These flexible, scalable system configurations address a wide range of applications and budgets. FLEX Systems enable customization of industry-standard test cases and the creation of user-defined tests for focused testing during development, integration and design verification of 3G W-CDMA terminals.

U-ATS forms a complete range of solutions suitable for all phases of W-CDMA terminal design, development and deployment.
