SpotCell improves 3G indoor performance

While the wireless world readies for broad scale deployment of HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), 3G technology being deployed by GSM Operators ideally capable of up to 1 Mb per second data throughput, Spotwave Wireless asserts that a glaring problem impacts the ability of the network to deliver on this high speed promise where it's needed most. The company solves this performance problem with their SpotCell indoor wireless coverage products.

"Getting the highest speeds on an HSDPA network requires a crystal clear channel, therefore it's more vulnerable to impairment from poor in-building coverage," said Bill Carlin, CEO of Spotwave. "Without a great signal and clean wireless wave form, getting high speed data in a building with poor coverage would be like trying to receive HD-TV with a rabbit ear antenna."

A common axiom from radio communications called Shannon's Law impacts a wireless networks, and is of particular importance to 3G networks. Shannon's law predicts the useful capacity of any communications channel based on signal and noise: the more information you try to get through a channel, the better the signal to noise ratio has to be. Even in areas and buildings close to cell sites, signal is impaired by material like concrete, steel and coated glass. The throughput in many buildings is diminished since the proportion of signal to noise is lower than it needs to be, yet the places where wireless broadband is used the most are indoor locations.

"Unlike a traditional repeater or BDA which creates additional noise and can corrupt the HSDPA waveform, Spotwave technology ensures the HSDPA wave is perfectly maintained and that the signal to noise ratio is at its highest possible level," said Mike Roper, Spotwave's Chief Technology Officer. "The bottom line here is that with Spotwave's products the carrier can ensure their advertised throughput is truly high speed with a product that maintains their 3G network integrity, and that the subscribers of the service actually get what they pay for - high speed wireless data, anywhere, any time."

Spotwave's line of SpotCell adaptive coverage systems enhance coverage for a range of wireless technology covering both cellular and PCS bands for GSM, CDMA, EV-DO (1X and rev A) as well as UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA. The company's latest offering, the SpotCell 2500Xe is the first product of its kind to provide integrated support for operators with voice and data traffic in both cellular and PCS bands.

The SpotCell 2500Xe system's integrated support for complex dual and split band networks as well as all 3G technologies is currently targeted at North American frequency bands in 800 and 1900 mHZ. Spotwave is working closely with carriers in Europe and Asia to deliver a product with support for 900, 1800 and 2100 frequencies in 2006.
