Analog Devices showcases broad portfolio at 3GWC

At the 3G World Congress and Exhibition in Hong Kong, executives from Analog Devices will lead presentations that explore the impact of semiconductor technology on next-generation wireless designs. In addition, ADI will be showcasing wireless technologies, ranging from ICs, complete chipsets and reference designs for cellular handsets, to software programmable processors, converters and RFICs for wireless base stations. "Analog Devices has been an innovator in wireless technology since the inception of the cellular industry, and nowhere is this commitment to innovation more evident than in the product demonstrations and technical presentations we are promoting at this year's 3G World Congress," said Christian Kermarrec, vice president, RF and wireless systems, Analog Devices. "The semiconductor innovations Analog Devices has enabled, from complete chipsets and complementary analog components for cellular handsets to high-performance converters, DSP and RF function blocks for base stations, give our customers the versatility and performance needed to compete in today's ultra-fragmented cellular market."

Mr. Christian Kermarrec, vice president, RF and wireless systems, Analog Devices, will be giving a keynote address on Thursday, November 17 at 9 a.m. as part of the plenary session titled, "The Technology Dimension: A Portfolio of Solutions," which will focus on network infrastructure, wireless devices and semiconductor initiatives. Mr. Kermarrec's presentation will illustrate how to leverage advanced semiconductor technology for improved 3G handsets. This will include discussions on the optimum partitioning of 3G terminal function blocks, enhanced peripherals for 3G handsets and semiconductor technology for improved user interfaces.

Additionally, Dr. Finbarr Moynihan, from ADI's 3G RF and wireless systems program, will lead a presentation titled, "Capitalizing on Next-Generation Smart Phone and Semiconductor Innovation" on Friday, November 18 at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Moynihan will explore options for multi-mode handset implementation, including TD-SCDMA solutions with incremental evolution from single-mode to dual-mode, market drivers for multi-mode TD-SCDMA handsets and how to leverage software-based solutions and hardware partitioning to enable flexible multi-mode terminals.

The show marks the first public demonstration of the new Othello-E single-chip radio transceiver for the EDGE cellular standard. Based on Analog Devices' award-winning direct conversion Othello radio architecture, the Othello-E transceiver integrates virtually all the necessary components for a complete quad-band EDGE radio design.

At this year's 3G World Congress and Exhibition, Analog Devices will showcase its full line of RAM-based SoftFone baseband ICs and Othello direct conversion radio transceivers. Among the product demonstrations include the AD6720 SoftFone baseband IC, which incorporates digital and analog baseband processing and power management functions in a single device, allowing it to be used for a range of GSM/GPRS handset products. Also in the booth will be Analog Devices Othello-G radio transceiver (AD6548), which enables the industry's most compact radio by shrinking the radio size in GSM/GPRS cellular telephones to as little as 1.5 square centimeters.

For EDGE terminals, Analog Devices will showcase its successful Blackfin SoftFone for EDGE platform - a highly integrated solution spanning the microphone to antenna signal chain, offering a complete platform for developers of handsets based on the EDGE standard. Each of these chipsets is based on Analog Devices' Blackfin Processor and delivers significant performance and power consumption benefits to customers. The Blackfin SoftFone for EDGE Platform is complemented by the recently announced Othello-E radio transceiver (part number AD6546), a single chip solution combining all the radio and power management functions for an ultra-compact, cost-effective EDGE radio.

For 3G terminals, Analog Devices will showcase SoftFone chipsets that support the TD-SCDMA, W-CDMA and EDGE standards. The SoftFone-LCR chipset provides all the necessary functions to design a handset based on the emerging 3G Low Chip Rate (LCR) TD-SCDMA air interface. The chipset is currently the only complete TD-SCDMA solution available from a single supplier, thus providing time-to-market and performance advantages over alternative implementations. Analog Devices' SoftFone-W chipset for W-CDMA handsets will also be showcased at the booth.

For camera phones and camera module applications, Analog Devices will be demonstrating the AD5398 lens driver chip. The AD5398 is the smallest, most integrated and highest performance digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for lens auto focus applications. Featuring an ultra-small size of only 1.7 mm x 1.5 mm and up to 120mA of drive at 10-bit resolution, the AD5398 does not require any other components for auto focus control. Only simple connections are required to the battery, motor and the processor/controller over an I2C interface. The AD5398 is the first in a new generation of lens drivers by Analog Devices, joining an industry-leading portfolio of lens drivers for zoom, shutter, iris and NDF, using the latest motor/actuator technologies.

Analog Devices also offers a wide product portfolio of user interface and connectivity ICs for cellular handsets that includes motion sensors, video interface ICs, lens drivers, touch screen digitizers, power management ICs, RF power detectors, and more. Within Analog Devices' booth, the company will demonstrate several of these devices.

For designers of wireless infrastructure equipment, Analog Devices will be showcasing its TigerSHARC Processor, as well as high-speed A/D and D/A converters and high-performance RFICs. The TigerSHARC Processor enables software-based implementations of the physical layer for WiMAX and 3G applications. This is important to allow cost effective equipment upgrades that improve performance and add features.
