Venturi Wireless introduces optimization suite for the handset market

November 14, 2005

Venturi Wireless, a provider of 3G mobile optimization solutions, announced its new optimization suite for consumer applications and wireless devices ranging from feature phones to smartphones and PDAs. Venturi's handset optimization suite includes the Venturi V5000 optimization server, the VClient Handset Edition, and the VCentral management system. Venturi solutions optimize the performance of applications over any wireless data network, including 1xRTT, EV-DO, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA and WiMAX/Wi-Bro networks.

Venturi Wireless will demonstrate its new multimedia product suite for consumers at the 3G World Congress Show, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center, Booth #1811, November 14-15, 2005.

Venturi's high-capacity V5000 server appliance significantly improves the speed and reliability of a wide variety of consumer applications, including audio and video streaming, location-based services, email, and Web content. The V5000's architecture easily scales to enable mobile operators to meet the demands of the broad consumer market, supporting up to millions of optimized user connections without any degradation in service quality.

The VClient Handset Edition works with the Venturi V5000 server to automatically deliver optimized access to consumer applications. The VClient Handset Edition can be easily ported onto the most popular feature phones and smartphones based on Symbian, Linux, Windows Mobile, and BREW.

Delivering the Multimedia Performance Consumers Expect

Venturi dramatically improves the multimedia experience with faster initial start time, faster time to load, and fewer buffering-related interruptions. These are critical for music and video streaming services since they have a direct impact on user experience and service adoption. The Venturi V5000 server accelerates downloads up to three times, while video/audio streams start two to three times faster. In addition, frame freezing (or re-buffering) is virtually eliminated.

The VClient acts as a transparent "media inter-mediator" to the media server, using bit-rate estimation of network transmission speeds for smoother playback of multimedia applications. Client- and server-side audio/video buffers keep the data stream from freezing during playback.

"Consumers have high expectations for multimedia performance due to their experience with TV, radio, and broadband Internet. Venturi's new product suite will enable subscribers to receive the type of audio and video performance they expect," said Bassam Khan, vice president of products at Venturi Wireless. "Wireless operators can gain a competitive advantage as well as enhance subscriber loyalty by offering their customers the highest-quality mobile data experience available today."

Maximizing Network and Spectrum Resources

By improving wireless transfer rates, Venturi's new product suite enables wireless carriers to more efficiently utilize their network capacity, thus substantially reducing capital and operational expenditures. As a result, wireless carriers can serve significantly more customers over their existing network infrastructure while delivering superior mobile data services.

"Venturi's product suite for handset optimization will greatly enhance the delivery of next-generation services and applications, which is important for adoption," said Philip Marshall, vice president, Yankee Group. "Wireless optimization solutions such as Venturi's make efficient use of spectrum and the network infrastructure, enabling rapid subscriber growth without incurring additional capital expenditures."

Management System Rounds Out Offering

VCentral's monitoring and management capabilities give wireless carriers unprecedented control and visibility into the performance of their wireless broadband services. Network administrators can view server performance levels in aggregate or at the individual server level, generate system-wide reports on server health, and analyze user profiles to segment their subscriber base.

The Venture V5000 and VCentral are configured in an integrated rack system for carrier-class resiliency, redundancy, and system-level management.

Venturi's Adaptive Airlink Optimization

Venturi's Adaptive Airlink Optimization is a cross-layer solution that improves the performance of multimedia applications over the wireless link, transparently replacing Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), including the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) for video, with the patented Venturi Transport Protocol (VTP). VTP overcomes the high latency and high packet loss issues that plague even next-generation wireless networks. VTP uses rate estimation to transmit data at full network speed, thus eliminating TCP's inefficiencies. VTP avoids TCP's congestion control reactions, which cause high latency and back-offs, leading to faster speeds and fewer dropped sessions, interruptions, and connection time-outs.

Poor signal quality, interference, and network load also degrade performance, causing problems such as sluggish speeds and video "freezing." Because VTP improves multimedia speed and reliability even in poor radio frequency (RF) conditions, users receive consistently high performance. With Adaptive Airlink Optimization, carriers gain improved performance and enhanced coverage with no loss of quality.

Pricing and Availability

The Venturi V5000 and VCentral will be available the first quarter of 2006. The VClient Handset Edition is available today for Windows Mobile Smartphones and Pocket PCs and will be available for feature phones starting January 2006.
