Tanzania to get 3G Network
November 29, 2006 - source: BWCS
South African-based mobile operator Vodacom has announced plans to expand its networks in Tanzania by rolling out new 3G infrastructure there. Work is due to start on the new infrastructure early next year it is not clear who will supply the equipment.
The mobile company claims it has noted a pent up demand for high-speed data services among its current crop of customers in Tanzania and intends to build a UMTS network to satisfy this perceived need. Certainly, recent revenue figures at Vodacom seem to support this view, mobile data revenues in the country rose by 30% over the last year. Vodacom currently has some 2.6 million subscribers in Tanzania and says it is targeting a figure of 3 million by the end of this year.
