Clinton: Find Me 3G Bandwidth

date: 20 October 2000

In response to a report touting the promises of third generation wireless technology, President Clinton issued an executive memorandum Friday urging federal agencies -- including the departments of commerce and defense -- to work together to identify spectrum that can be used to implement 3G networks.

The government hopes to release a report on Nov. 15 identifying the unused bandwidth or occupied spectrum that can instead be used to accommodate 3G wireless devices.

Next generation (3G) services are expected to provide consumers with worldwide roaming for cellular phones, faster Internet access and allow video and audio streaming.
