Spirent Communications Solution Simplifies 3G W-CDMA Testing

date: October 8, 2001

Spirent Communications, a wholly-owned business group of Spirent, today announced the commercial release of its TAS5600W Universal Interference Emulator.

The TAS5600W is an application-specific interference solution for receiver performance testing of W-CDMA terminals and base stations to 3GPP specifications.

This lab-based test solution quickly and accurately tests the receiver performance of W-CDMA terminal and base station receivers in the presence of co- and adjacent-channel interference. The ability of W-CDMA receivers to perform under severe interference conditions is critical toward achieving the high data rates that differentiate 3G technology.

The TAS5600W dramatically simplifies the test configuration needed for W-CDMA receiver performance testing to the 3GPP specifications. This unique instrument integrates real-time digitally modulated interference generators, RF circuitry required to precisely combine carrier and interference signals, and high-performance calibration techniques into one compact chassis with a single point of control.

The TAS5600W's two independent, real-time signal generation engines provide the key additive interference elements necessary for W-CDMA receiver performance analysis and allows additional digitally modulated interference types to be added via software upgrades.

Unlike general-purpose signal generators, the TAS5600W system provides all of the capabilities required to accurately combine the carrier and interference signals, in a single hardware enclosure.

The internal high-accuracy power meter measures an incoming RF signal, and using advanced calibration algorithms, adds the precise amount of noise (AWGN) or interference (CW or W-CDMA modulated) to obtain a desired carrier to noise (C/N) or carrier to interference (C/I) ratio.

The TAS5600W gives complete coverage of the UMTS bands to enable testing of both W-CDMA variants: FDD and TDD. Control of the TAS5600W is provided by TASKIT/5600, a powerful Windows-based software user interface.

The TAS5600W works in conjunction with Spirent's industry-standard TAS4500 FLEX5 RF Channel Emulator. Used together, the two instruments enable comprehensive, repeatable W-CDMA receiver performance testing to be carried out quickly and efficiently.

"Together, the TAS5600W and TAS4500 FLEX5 form a uniquely capable W-CDMA receiver performance test setup" states David Garrison, director of Test Instruments at Spirent Communications, TAS Division. "The TAS5600W's high level of integration, accuracy, and straightforward control allow our customers to focus their resources on product development and verification instead of test bench implementation."
