OpenTel and LG completed IP softswitchdate: October 17, 2001 Sydney, Australia-based Open Telecommunications (OpenTel) says it has successfully completed the first phase of an all-Internet protocol (IP) 3G mobile "softswitch" with LG Electronics in South Korea. LG Electronics provides telecommunications equipment including transmission, switching and mobile systems and is a leading supplier of CDMA wireless products. In April 2000, OpenTel was awarded a multi-phase contract by LG Electronics for joint development of the all-IP 3G mobile softswitch for application to the South Korean and international telecommunications market. The first phase, now completed, involved development of software to link with other LG Electronics network elements. The resultant product, Open WirelessCallAgent (openWCA), can now be used as the core element of a 3G wireless network, OpenTel says. It's expected to be part of LG Electronics' cdma2000 wireless system, to be marketed internationally next year.
