Next Generation Software From Logica Redefines 3G Network Planning

date: October 17, 2001

Advanced UMTS and 3G networks came a major step closer to reality today with the launch of Logica's latest 'Odyssey for 3G' network planning tool. The innovative software will play a pivotal role in the design of networks and enable vendors and network operators to determine optimum coverage, capacity and service delivery requirements.

The network planning software offers several new 3G network milestones, including support for the latest handset location requirements and advanced UMTS/3G simulation techniques which help operators save time and money in the roll-out of UMTS networks.

Location-based services are set to become an important and integral facet of 3G networks. By being able to pinpoint a subscriber's location, network operators can offer more comprehensive, appropriate and valuable services, such as listings of restaurants, cinemas or bars in the immediate vicinity, or up-to-date traffic news pertinent to the user's location.

The facility to do this, however, depends on the operator's ability to identify the location of the user's handset with a guarantee of total accuracy. This is where Logica's latest version of Odyssey plays a crucial role. Its pin-point modelling improves accuracy of planning the position of an operator's Location Measurement Units (LMUs) within the network architecture.

Through its latest development, Logica has made the network planning process crucial to the successful delivery and uptake of potentially high-value services for mobile operators of all kinds.
