Monaco Telecom Chooses Portal Software for 2G and 3G Convergent Billing

date: October 17, 2001

Portal Software announced today that Infranet, its convergent customer management and billing platform, is being deployed by Monaco Telecom. Infranet Wireless will initially support 2G (GSM) billing followed by new 3G-based services. Monaco Telecom is one of Europe's innovative national telecommunications companies with a rapidly increasing number of mobile subscribers.

Monaco Telecom is 51 percent owned by Vivendi International and offers fixed, mobile, and ISP services. The company wanted to replace its legacy 2G billing system with an online, real-time, convergent billing platform that is capable of supporting multiple 2G services, and has the ability to migrate to 3G technology. Other requirements included support for pre- and postpaid customers, open APIs, and web-enabled customer self-service alongside new broadband products such as video-on-demand and streaming.

Monaco Telecom selected Infranet for its 2G billing requirements following an extensive evaluation of possible solutions. Capable of covering 2G and 3G technologies using the same core product, Infranet is currently being deployed for its GSM mobile customer base. Monaco Telecom is also one of the first companies worldwide to run Infranet on an IBM AIX production system (see separate press release issued today titled Portal Software's Infranet Now Available on IBM eServer pSeries Platform).

"Monaco Telecom faces the same complexity as many other telecom operators because customers demand similar high quality services. Infranet was chosen because of its flexibility for tariffing plus support for pre- and postpaid customers. We appreciate having just one billing platform for our 2G/3G, ISP and wireline activity. Infranet proved to be the best solution for Monaco Telecom and Portal Software has proved to be a very proficient company to work with," said Thierry Poyet, IT Manager, Monaco Telecom.

"Infranet Wireless is the industry's only truly real-time, convergent wireless platform," said Ian Perry, vice president, Portal Software (Europe) Ltd. "Monaco Telecom's selection of Infranet Wireless demonstrates that we can address the convergent needs of wireless operators today and into the future."

Currently being implemented by Portal business partner Cap Gemini Ernst and Young, Infranet will run on IBM pSeries Servers with the AIX (UNIX) operating system. Scheduled for completion in November 2001, the first phase will migrate billing for 15,000 mobile customers to Infranet. In later phases, Infranet will support 3G and IP-based services including new content-rich services.
