Telefonica Makes First 3G Callsdate: November 13, 2001 Spanish cellular telephone company Telefonica Moviles SA (TEM) Wednesday carried out what it said was the first 3G, mobile telecommunications call made over a public network in Europe. Moviles made the calls at a 3G conference in Barcelona. The company had equipped the area around the conference hall with 3G network and coverage infrastructure. In the demonstration, Miguel Menchen, Moviles's general manager for market development, called a 3G telephone based in the company's headquarters in Madrid. Video footage of Spanish motorcyclist Tony Elias, part of a Moviles commercial, was sent to a 3G handset, made by NEC Corp. (NIPNY), and transmitted onto a personal digital assistant and on a laptop computer. The speed of the service was 64 kilobits per second, which Menchen said was the minimum speed for the 3G standard. Menchen said Moviles aims to have 3G coverage in 16 Spanish cities with over 250,000 inhabitants by April next year, in line with regulatory requirements. Advertising 3G services would begin next summer, but Menchen refused to say when mass marketing of the services would begin.
