UMTS Forum confirms more positive news on 3Gdate: October 18, 2001 Speaking in his keynote presentation opening Day 1 of the UMTS 2001 Congress in Barcelona, UMTS Forum Chairman Dr Bernd Eylert argued that the stage is now set for 3G to offer mobile users a compelling mobile multimeda experience. "The last twelve months have seen 3G on rocky ground in the eyes of the media", commented Dr Eylert, "but the reality is far more encouraging than that. Major achievements in licensing, standards, terminals and services together create a solid framework for a successful take-off." Dr Eylert reflected on the successful launch of NTT DoCoMo's own FOMA service in Japan, stating that immediate demand for the service demonstrates compelling 'proof of concept' for 3G. He also confirmed news from major manufacturers that they will have 3G terminals ready in time to support UMTS launches in Q4 2002 "in quantities of millions of devices." Eylert reported positive news from the recently-concluded meeting in Tokyo of ITU-R WP8F that has proposed future enhancements to IMT-2000 radio access technology, including a new high-speed downlink capability that will allow WCDMA to support data speeds up to 10 Mbps. "Standards precede the market by five years", said Eylert. "This industry-wide agreement, which has been facilitated by the ITU, demonstrates the close collaboration between the mobile industry and the ITU in development of a planned, coherent and successful evolution path for IMT-2000."
