French 3G Auction Could Open This Yeardate: October 19, 2001 - source: BWCS
The French government is thought to be considering opening the auction for its two remaining third-generation mobile licences before the end of this year, following this week’s alterations to the licence terms. According to a report in French daily Le Figaro, the French Finance Ministry will publish new licence terms within six weeks; interested parties will then be given several months to prepare their offers, before the final winners are revealed early next year. Following the disappointment of the French government’s first 3G auction earlier this year, when only two of the four available licences were sold, it had been thought that the authorities would wait until at least after next year’s general elections to re-run the sale. However, this week’s decision by the government to reduce the upfront costs of the licences to just €619 million and then take a cut of future 3G revenues has brought renewed interest from several companies which had previously ruled themselves out on price grounds.
