Novatel Wireless First to be Granted FCC Approval for 1X Wireless PC Card Modemdate: October 20, 2001 Novatel Wireless, a provider of wireless data access solutions, announced the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulatory approval of the Merlin C201 Wireless PC Card Modem based on CDMA2000 1X technology. The Merlin C201 is designed to support data transmission speeds up to 153.6 kbps, connecting users to the Internet up to ten times the speed of wireless data modems currently available today. "Novatel Wireless is aggressively expanding its product offerings by developing first-to-market 3G wireless modems with competitive features," said Peter Leparulo, senior vice president of CDMA operations for Novatel Wireless. "Being first-to-market with exciting new wireless technologies is part of our core strategy. Having FCC approval is a crucial milestone in our CDMA2000 1X development." Slightly larger than a credit card, Merlin C201 slides inside your Type II PC Card slot allowing access to email, corporate databases and the Internet at speeds up to 153.6 kbps in CDMA2000 1X coverage areas and 14.4 kbps in IS 95A coverage areas. Merlin C201 also has a built-in antenna enabling maximum network coverage and enhanced portability. The FCC is an independent United States government agency, directly responsible to Congress, and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. possessions. CDMA2000 is the name used by the Telecommunications Industry Association to refer to Third Generation CDMA (3G). The Third Generation of mobile communications (3G) is a concept outlined in a set of proposals called IMT2000, to define an "anywhere, any time" standard for the future of universal personal communications. The CDMA path to 3G is through CDMA2000 1X, then on to 1xEV-DO and 1xEV-DV. The first phase of CDMA2000, also known as 1X, enables operators with existing IS-95 systems to double overall system capacity yielding data rates up to 153.6 kbps.
