Asia sets timeline for W-CDMAdate: October 21, 2001 - source: Siemens UMTS NewsDesk Announcements have been made in two Asian countries, China and Singapore, over the scheduled rollout of W-CDMA. China Mobile has quashed rumours that it may be using home-grown technology TD-SCDMA as it has said that it will be ready to launch W-CDMA services by the end of 2003. China Mobile's vice general manager, Li Yue, said that the company should be ready to launch the service by early 2004 at the latest. Li said that work on constructing the network would take 10 months, but ultimately the launch would be dependent on when the government issued licenses. In Singapore, M1 has said that it is expecting to start trial services by the end of 2002. CEO Neil Montefiore said: "We have some plans for regional development." Montefiore said that the company's 750 base stations throughout Singapore were 3G-ready but the rollout would depend on the finalisation of standards and the availability of handsets that can handle the applications. "We'll probably see trial services towards the end of 2002 and commercial handsets available to come in the first quarter of 2003," he said.
