SOLiD Technologies and Airvana Announce Formation of 3G Partnership

date: October 22, 2001

SOLiD Technologies, a Korean wireless infrastructure company and Airvana Inc., a provider of 3G wireless infrastructure, today announced a partnership to jointly design, develop and market 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless infrastructure for the Korean market.

Under the terms of the agreement, the SOLiDTech-Airvana partnership will jointly develop 3G wireless Radio Access Network infrastructure specifically for the Korean wireless market. This equipment uses the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO standard adopted by the 3GPP2 standards body. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (1x EVolution- Data Only) is also recognized as an IMT-2000 3G standard by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

The partnership combines SOLiD Technologies' deep optical and RF experience in the Korean market with Airvana's innovative wireless and IP technology to deliver an end-to-end CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution designed to meet the unique needs of advanced Korean CDMA operators. Korea is one of the world's largest wireless markets with more than 28 million subscribers and a nationwide wireless penetration of over 59%.

"Korea was the first country in the world to deploy IS-95 cdmaOne as well as 3G CDMA2000 1x networks," said Dr. Joon Chung, President and CEO of SOLiD Technologies. "Now Korean service providers intend to be the first to deploy the world's most advanced 3G wireless data network. SOLiDTech-Airvana understands the challenges operators will face in rapidly and cost effectively deploying an advanced 3G data network in dense Korean cities. Our compact, flexible infrastructure products are designed to help Korean operators quickly deploy a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network wherever they choose, be it rooftops, subways or inside office or apartment high rise buildings "

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a 3G mobile data technology that enables "always on" data to be sent over PCS and cellular wireless networks at speeds comparable to DSL or cable modems, at a cheaper cost per byte than any other 3G technology. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO data rates can reach up to 2.4Mbps, with average sustained rates expected to be around 300 to 600 kbps.

"The broadband speed of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, combined with our innovative all-IP architecture radically changes the economics of deploying a 3G wireless data solution" said Randy Battat, President and CEO of Airvana. SOLiDTech- Airvana's All-IP 3G architecture means rapid deployment, lower operational costs, and new services and revenue streams that are difficult to achieve with legacy, voice oriented architectures. We are pleased to help our Korean customers be first to market with a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution"
