ITU meets on developments of 4Gdate: October 23, 2001 A working group of The International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication sector (ITU-R) held discussions on advanced 3G IMT-2000 systems, which will eventually lead to 4G mobile technologies, the Japanese government said in a statement Wednesday. At its sixth WP8F (working party 8F) conference meeting held in Tokyo this week, ITU-R reached agreement that it will adopt a basic concept that mobile telecommunication systems will be combined with other systems such as wireless LAN, and achieve a data transmission speed up to 100Mbpsby 2010. As for more advanced IMT-2000 3G systems, the ITU decided to push development of systems that enable two IMT-2000 standards -- for high-speed packet data and voice transmission -- to operate at the same time. WCDMA, which has been adopted by NTT DoCoMo Inc. and J-Phone Communications Co. Ltd., will be upgraded to a maximum download speed of up to 8M bps, while CDMA2000 will be upgraded to a download speed up to 2.4M bps. Also at the meeting, plans to promote international roaming on IMT-2000 standards were proposed and will be approved by the SG8 meeting in November, the statement said. The sixth ITU-R meeting was attended by 250 members from 33 countries. The next conference meeting, which is expected to be in February 2002, will be held in New Zealand, according to the statement.
