Mobile alliance provides catalyst for rapid 3G roll-out

date: October 23, 2001

UbiNetics, a next-generation wireless communications technology company, and PrairieComm, an 3G baseband processor developer, have signed an MoU covering the supply of a multi-mode, multi-band UMTS/GSM/GPRS baseband processor, for 3G terminals.

Under the agreement, PrairieComm will supply UbiNetics with PCI5110 chips for use in UbiNetics' new generation of 3G terminal products. The first of these will be a handheld 3GPP Test Mobile, designed to address operators' network rollout, debugging and optimisation needs.

UbiNetics has already established itself as the expert and market leader in infrastructure testing with its TM100 3G Test Mobile. This is used in R&D testing by all the major infrastructure vendors, and has become the de facto test standard, facilitating interoperability between different vendors' equipment. The new product will build on this by offering a portable, diagnostic tool to enable network operators to complete field testing and allow application developers to prove next-generation solutions.

UbiNetics will also provide an alternative source of robust 3G protocol software for terminal developers using PrairieComm's 3G chips. As this software is already licensed to companies in Korea, Japan and the US, the combination of PrairieComm and UbiNetics provides a powerful solution for early 3G and multi-mode UMTS/GSM/GPRS terminals. Terminal developers will also have access to UbiNetics' integration expertise.
