Airvana to Partner with Nortel Networks on All-IP 3G Wireless Infrastructuredate: October 24, 2001 Airvana, an infrastructure provider of 3G wireless mobile networks, today announced a joint development and supply agreement with Nortel Networks. The agreement is to support Nortel Network's CDMA2000 1xEV-DO program, announced by Nortel Networks on October 22, 2001. Airvana and Nortel Networks have been working together to develop All- IP high-speed data solutions for the Nortel CDMA Metro Cell. The resulting products will be based on technology used in Airvana's All-IP 3G Radio Access Network (IP-RAN), also announced on October 22, 2001, and the Nortel Networks CDMA Product portfolio. The ITU recently recognized CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless technology under the 3G IMT-2000 standard. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is an "always on" technology that enables data to be sent over PCS and cellular wireless networks at speeds comparable to DSL or cable modems, and at a cheaper cost per byte than any other 3G technology in development today. "Nortel Networks CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology will help improve operator profitability and competitive advantage," said Steve Slattery, vice president and general manager, CDMA/TDMA, Nortel Networks. " The jointly developed CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution will enable operators to deliver enhanced, next generation wireless data services -- such as wireless web browsing, audio/video streaming and wireless gaming -- to end users, which essentially leads to greater customer retention and ROI." "Airvana is very pleased to be working in partnership with Nortel Networks, one of the world's premier wireless infrastructure suppliers," said Randy Battat, president and CEO of Airvana. "Airvana's All-IP architecture will transform the economics of wireless data."
