Hutchison wants to be first with 3G in Thailanddate: October 24, 2001 - source: Siemens UMTS NewsDesk Hutchison Wireless is to upgrade its CDMA service in an attempt to become the first operator to provide 3G in Thailand. A spokesperson said the company had completed the first phase of network installation with 171 cell sites in central Bangkok for voice communications. However, the official launch has been postponed as the trend is more toward data communications. He said the new investment would cost about $200-300 million in the initial stage. Network expansion will be handled by BFKT Co, its subsidiary. The plan is to roll out the service in phases, which it hopes will be completed in Q1 next year with an official launch soon after.
