Thailand to discuss 3G issuesdate: October 29, 2001 The Telecommunications Association of Thailand will hold a seminar on Wednesday to discuss the introduction of 3G mobile phones in Thailand and to deliver guidelines on how the future National Telecom Commission (NTC) will issue licenses, the association's president Kosol Petchsuwan said over the weekend. The seminar has brought in Friedhelm Hillebrand, chairman of ETSI's Technical Committee SMG - Special Mobile Group - to discuss the auction of 3G frequencies in Europe, Kosol said. "By doing so, several telecom giants in Europe were unable to come up with the necessary funds due to the global slowdown and the downturn of the telecom industry. In Italy and Austria, there were no bidders at all," he said. "The seminar will also provide information about 3G mobile phones, including how to distribute frequencies to prospective operators in Thailand. This will give an edge to the yet-to-be-established NTC," said Kosol. Those interested in offering a 3G mobile phone service in Thailand will have to wait until the Telecommunications Business Bill becomes law around the beginning of next year. "We have to wait for the establishment of the NTC, which is likely to be finished around June next year," Kosol said. The allocation of 3G frequencies to operators will likely be completed by January 2003, while the issuance of licenses is expected to take place around June in the same year, he said. "I think the 3G service will be operational around June 2005," he said.
