China Mobile on top of 3G

date: October 30, 2001

According to Zhang Yue, the Director with China Mobile Research and Development Center, China Mobile is confident in the 3G technology.

Thanks to the rapid development of Internet, the demands of mobile communications have been increasing, thus new technologies and new frequencies are required.

China Mobile has injected lots of funds in the CPRS system construction of 2.5G, in that the present networks can't provide the mobile Internet services for the subscribers and 3 to 5 years are still needed for 3G's maturity. GPRS not only has high development potential, but also can foster the future 3G market.

Speaking of the selection principles of 3G standard, Zhang pointed out that firstly, the technology maturity should be ensured and secondly, the economy of the networks establishment must be guaranteed.

According to Zhang, China Mobile may adopt the WCDMA technology to establish networks that cover China. Zhang also released China Mobile may introduce 3G in 2003.

Early this monthe, China Mobile has signed a GPRS agreement with Taiwan's KG Telecom, and the two companies have also launched initial talks on 2.5G and 3G cooperation.
