Russia's VimpelCom selects Alcatel as sole 3G field trial supplierdate: October 30, 2001 VimpelCom, a leading provider of telecommunications services in Russia, has signed a MoU with Alcatel for the supply of a 3G/UMTS trial network to its fully-owned subsidiary KB Impuls. Under the terms of the MoU, Alcatel will deliver and install its complete Evolium solution including the UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) radio systems, the network systems (CORE), as well as the associated Radio Network Controller (RNC) and multimedia equipment. The radio systems, which include the UMTS base stations (Node B), are developed and produced by Evolium SAS, the joint venture between Alcatel and Fujitsu. Thanks to this infrastructure, VimpelCom will be able to conduct data and video communications in packet mode as well as voice communications in AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) circuit mode. Alcatel's UMTS solutions will enable VimpelCom to test new high-speed/high-quality mobile multimedia applications such as chat, multiparty videoconferencing, video streaming, MP3 music downloading, Web browsing, and multimedia SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) calls between multimedia terminals (voice & video). "We are happy to conduct this UMTS field trial with Alcatel in Moscow and to get first hand experience with 3G technology as well as to evaluate its market potentials," said Sergey Avdeev, chief technical officer of VimpelCom. "Our Evolium 3G offer, one of the most competitive on the market, will give VimpelCom a unique opportunity to launch field trials. Our UMTS infrastructure will allow them to conduct both circuit-switched calls and high-speed data transfers in packet mode reaching speeds of 180Kbit/s", added Michel Rahier, president of Alcatel's Mobile Networks activities. Through KB Impuls, VimpelCom has been selected by the Russian ministry of Telecommunications to conduct one of three UMTS field trials in order to test electromagnetic compatibility with existing radio transmissions, and commercial viability in this area. The VimpelCom's trial adds to the some 10 UMTS field trial networks with commercial equipment that Alcatel will deliver by the end of 2001 in Europe and in Asia.
