UMTS mobile network deployed in Paris by Alcatel and Orangedate: October 30, 2001 Orange SA and Alcatel announce they have conducted the first voice, data and video communications on the Orange UMTS mobile infrastructure network installed in Paris by Alcatel. This pre-commercial network infrastructure not only carries voice communications in circuit mode but also allows the transfer of data and high-speed video images in packet mode. These communication links were achieved using UMTS terminals called icTerm supplied by Fujitsu. The tests already conducted in Paris have confirmed the high quality of the voice communications. Calls were successfully made between two mobile UMTS terminals, a mobile UMTS terminal and a mobile 2G/GSM terminal, and between a mobile UMTS terminal and a phone connected to the switched fixed network (PSTN), demonstrating the integration of a UMTS network to both the Orange GSM mobile network and France Telecom's fixed network. Calls were conducted from inside a building, from a motor vehicle and by a pedestrian moving around downtown Paris within Orange's UMTS-cell coverage zone. These trials have also confirmed the Alcatel's UMTS Evolium infrastructure's quality in the area of high-speed data & video transfers. It enables Web Browsing, access to online information, images transfer, video streaming & downloading, or even transferring live video from a distant Webcam. The network achieved high levels of quality and speed (360Kbps available for the end user) in full compliance to UMTS standards and requirements of Orange. Conducting trial tests on this infrastructure is part of the Orange deployment program for a 3G mobile communications network in France. In May 1999, Orange made Europe's first 3G video call using NTTDoCoMo's original wide-band specification. The call was made at its multi-million pound 3G test bed in Bristol, United Kingdom. In September 2001, Orange SA announced that it has carried out the first voice, data and video transmission on its pilot UMTS network in France supplied by Alcatel. Alcatel delivered and installed its complete Evolium solution including the UTRAN radio systems, the Core network and a service platform. The radio systems which include the UMTS base stations (Node B) supplied by Alcatel were developed and produced by Evolium SAS, the joint venture between Alcatel and Fujitsu. "These tests have allowed us to step into the multimedia mobile universe, both with sound, data & video transmission in real time. Furthermore, we now feel that we have a network with several sites supporting the UMTS mobile specificity thanks to automatic hangover mechanisms operational right from the start", said Benoit Eymard, head of Operations and Development at Orange. "After the September 27th trials on Orange's experimental platform, we are happy to enable Orange to once again be one of the first operators in the world to conduct field trials on a truly deployed pre-commercial UMTS network", added Michel Rahier, president of Alcatel's Mobile Networks activities. "The third generation mobile networks market has gone into its second phase this past summer, through product delivery and the launch of the pre-commercial networks. Alcatel is today the first to supply an operator with a truly deployed UMTS network capable of transporting voice, data & video allowing automatic handover possibilities between the base stations."
