New telephone can talk with FOMA handsetsdate: October 31, 2001 NTT group's two regional carriers, NTT East and NTT West, are planning to launch sales as early as mid-November of a new type of ISDN telephone called the Moppet, which is capable of serving as a videophone. The Moppet will allow users to talk face-to-face with owners of videophone-type FOMA mobile phone handsets. This was revealed at an NTT Group exhibition event held in Tokyo Oct. 24-26. The exhibition included working demonstrations of a FOMA videophone user and a Moppet user viewing each other while holding a telephone conversation. Moppet users will not only be able to hold videophone conversations with other users of Moppets and FOMA videophones, but also with users of existing ISDN videophone models. The 3G-324M communications protocol is used for calls made between a Moppet and a FOMA videophone, while the ITU-T H.320 protocol is employed for calls between a Moppet and an ISDN videophone. For Moppet-FOMA videophone calls the video data is transferred at 64 kilobits per second, and for Moppet-ISDN videophone calls at either 64kbps or 128kbps. The 3G-324M protocol was formulated by the 3GPP -- and industry group set up to decide on industry standards for 3G W-CDMA mobile phones. Video data is encoded in the MPEG-4 format and voice data in the AMR format, with ITU-T H.245 as the system control protocol. ITU-T H.223 Annex B is employed to multiplex the video, voice and system control signals. When it goes on sale, the Moppet will become the world's first ISDN videophone capable of using the 3G-324M protocol. The body of the Moppet houses both a 1/4-inch CCD camera and a color 5-inch thin-film-transistor (TFT) LCD screen. Also, it has input/output jacks for video and audio, which means that users will be able to use their own video cameras to capture and send data, or to use a larger TV screen, for example, to view incoming data. The Moppet is only compatible with INS Net 64 phone lines. INS Net 64 is NTT East's ISDN service.
