Hutchinson interest in Finnish 3G

Hutchinson eyes Finland |
Hutchinson Whampoa is looking to establish its 3G presence in Finland.
The company has announced to the press its interest in obtaining
a 3G license in the Scandinavian country. Currently there are no
available 3G licenses in Finland but with the likely merger of both
Telia and Sonera, it would present an opportunity for Hutchinson
to acquire one.
Both Telia and Sonera hold Finnish 3G licenses but if the planned
merger between them succeeds then one of the 3G licenses will be
sold off. Telia and Sonera are both heavily in debt and the merger
of both companies would cut rollout cost by at least a third of
the estimated cost of US$2.5 billion per operator.
There are currently four Finish 3G license holders, Sonera, Suomen
3G, Radiolinja and Telia, which were offered in late 1999.
