South Korea's KTF to buy shares in KT ICOM
October 15, 2002
South Korean mobile operator KTF Co., a mobile unit of telecoms
giant KT Corp, said it would buy shares of its 3G mobile unit worth
$219 million to help the merger of the two. From October 23 to November
5, the company would buy 15 million KT ICOM shares valuing at KRW
18,227 per share, totaling KRW 273.4 billion ($219 mil).
The KT group's stake in KT ICOM would raise to 82.83 percent and
would make it easier for the merger of the two company to go ahead
with broad approval.
A spokesman for KTF said, "The company's board approved today a
plan to purchase a 15 percent stake in KT ICOM."
KTF would merge with unlisted KT ICOM by the end of the year to
avoid duplicate investments.
KT ICOM is one of two mobile operators to hold a South Korean WCDMA
license, which was awarded in December 2000. Its larger rival SK
Telecom also holds a WCDMA license. LG Telecom is the only other
to hold a 3G license but it is the CDMA 2000 standard.
