Tele2 steps up investment
October 15, 2002
Swedish mobile operator Tele2 will inject more investment in 3G
technology next year in order to meet its launch deadline.
Tele2 Chief Executive Lars-Johan Jarnheimer said to the press,
"Yes, definitely, investment will be high next year. In terms of
volume, the rollout of UMTS takes off after the start of the new
year. We will drive at full speed then."
Tele2 is one of four 3G license holder in Sweden and is the second
largest operator in the country. The firm is building its 3G network
with GSM operator Telia, who was not awarded a 3G license, in order
to cut costs. Telia will act as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator.
Another 3G license holder, Orange, had an application for extending
the rollout deadline rejected by the Swedish authorities. The reasons
stated by Orange for extending the deadline, such as lack of demand
and mask building permit problems, were judged to be insufficient.
Vodafone, also a Swedish 3G license holder, is waiting for the
decision from the authorities of its deadline extension application.
Ericsson has been chosen by Tele2 to supply the mobile network
equipment.
