Lucent to demonstrate roaming between WiFi and 1xEV-DO wireless
networks
October 15, 2002
Lucent Technologies announced plans to demonstrate seamless handoffs
of wireless data calls from a "WiFi" or wireless local area network
(WLAN) to a 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network at the Cellular Telecommunications
and Internet Association (CTIA) Wireless I.T. and Internet show,
taking place on Oct. 16-18 in Las Vegas. The demonstrations will
show laptop data calls being switched between these two types of
wireless access networks with no interruption in service.
Lucent has developed this solution to help address the growing
demand on the part of business users for uninterrupted high-speed
data access by utilizing both 3G wide-area mobile networks, which
offer ubiquitous geographic coverage, and WLANs, which offer high
speeds but more limited coverage.
The demonstration will utilize Lucent's 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network
equipment, a laptop equipped with a Sierra Wireless AirCard - a
wide-area wireless PC Card, a Proxim ORINOCO 802.11 WLAN card and
ipUnplugged's Seamless Roaming Gateway solution. It also incorporates
Mobile IP, a key standard established by the Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF), which enables seamless inter-technology handoffs
between 802.11 and 3G technologies and is essential to maintaining
"always-on" high-speed mobile Internet connections. This technique
is made possible by a unique mobile network architecture developed
by Bell Labs.
"We are excited to be able to demonstrate this capability, which
has tremendous utility for mobile workers that need to access critical
information while on the go using the fastest technology available,"
said John Marinho, vice president of offer management, Lucent's
Mobility Solutions Group. "We are committed to helping mobile operators
deliver secure 3G mobile data services such as this for the business
marketplace."
