Two Hundred Commercially Available CDMA2000
October 16, 2002
The CDMA Development Group (CDG)(www.cdg.org), today reported that
there are 200 commercially available CDMA2000 devices providing
consumers access to a wide array of 3G services.
They feature the most advanced functionality such as high-resolution
color displays, cameras, GPS and voice recognition, and support
the latest high-speed 3G applications including video, picture transfers
and audio streaming. CDMA2000 devices include handsets, PDAs and
wireless modems, and are supplied by more than 30 leading manufacturers
such as AnyDATA, Audiovox, Ericsson, GTRAN Wireless, Hitachi, Hyundai
CURITEL, Kyocera, LG Electronics, LG Infocomm, Motorola, Nokia,
Novatel Wireless, Samsung, Sanyo, Sierra Wireless, SK Teletech,
Sony Ericsson and Wavecom.
Today, CDMA2000 devices are available in 450 MHz, 800 MHz, 1700
MHz and 1900 MHz frequencies for markets in Asia, the Americas and
Europe, and several vendors have already committed to supplying
2100 MHz phones in the near future.
Economies of scale driven by the wide adoption of CDMA2000 are
already benefiting operators and consumers with wholesale prices
dropping more than 57 percent since 2000. Analysts expect that prices
will fall below $100 in 2003, and by 2004 they will be competitive
with handset prices for any 2G technology.
An additional advantage of CDMA2000 is backward compatibility with
cdmaOne™, which translates into a better experience for consumers
and greater flexibility for cdmaOne operators migrating to 3G. Furthermore,
all CDMA2000 handsets for 800 MHz are dual-mode CDMA-AMPS, a significant
benefit for a large base of operators in the Americas who have AMPS
coverage.
"The availability of a wide range of low-priced devices has been
a key factor for the commercial success of CDMA2000," said Perry
LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "CDMA2000 has the largest
number of manufacturers and the broadest selection of phones available
of any advanced technology. With such strong support, we expect
that CDMA2000 will continue to lead in 3G and the delivery of advanced
services to the consumer."
