Swedish Orange may appeal against decision
October 19, 2002
According to reports, Swedish mobile operator Orange may appeal
against the ruling by the Swedish national telecom regulator PTS
to not allow Orange extra time to rollout a national 3G service.
The operator has until 22nd October to fight the decision.
Orange said the PTS did not take into account obstacles involving
mobile operator Telia, who has been less than cooperative in allowing
Orange access to their GSM network. Orange also wants Telia to share
radio masts.
The PTS last month rejected Orange application to extend the rollout
deadline to 2006. Swedish Vodafone unit has also put follow an application
to extend the rollout deadline but the PTS has yet to make the decision.
On Thursday, Swedish Power signed a five-year deal with Svenska
UMTS Nät, Tele2 and Telia's joint 3G business, to install 3G antenna
in power line poles, which is expected to reduce Tele2's overall
3G buildout costs.
The PTS were not too happy with the 3G license holders for delays
and lack of both handsets and services after reading a report from
industry specialists Northstream. They compared the sluggish development
rate of Europe to the 3G success in Japan and Korea.
