Philips unveils Platform4

October 21, 2002

Complete media handling system enables multimedia content and applications distribution over mobile networks

Philips has unveiled Platform4, a complete end-to-end solution that will enable mobile operators to produce and distribute high quality multimedia content and applications over emerging next generation wireless services.

Based mainly on the 3GPP and ISO-compliant MPEG-4 codec standards for multimedia over mobile networks, Platform4 provides a world-class media handling system for operators rolling out next generation multimedia services.

In particular, it will enable operators to develop and offer attractive and compelling applications specifically tailored for wireless devices. Whether consumers are interested in Multimedia Messaging Services or on-demand news, sports, weather reports in broadcast-quality video, or access to CD-quality online music services, Platform4 will provide operators with a robust, scalable and highly secure environment for the distribution of premium content.

Initially Platform4 can be deployed by operators in an advanced test environment, based on open-standard technologies, in which to evaluate the potential for high quality content and applications distribution. The product will support next generation services such as Java, interactivity, games and high quality audio / video-on-demand as the network and devices deployment evolves to 3G.

In offering superior media quality and compression efficiency for wireless networks, Platform4 provides an invaluable tool for field-testing of both technological performance and consumer interest in mobile multimedia services.

Platform4 highlights the considerable benefits to operators of Philips' application of industry standards, especially its 15-year heritage in digital content codecs. Operators will gain significant advantage from the improved usage of premium bandwidth and service quality offered by this technology, ensuring a more satisfying user experience and, in the process, reducing subscriber turnover and increasing per-subscriber revenues.

"Philips firmly believes that exciting multimedia services will be the driving force behind consumer adoption of next generation mobile services," says Shailendra Jain, Chief Operating Officer, Philips MP4net.

"Platform4 epitomizes Philips' group-wide expertise in display and connectivity technology, and underlines our long history in digital video and audio developments. This technology will enable operators to herald a new era in telecommunications."
