Three may float next year
October 22, 2002
Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. said on Monday that it cannot rule out the
possibility that it will float its third-generation wireless operations
(Three) in the London market next year, but also said it has no
such plans at present.
A newspaper said Hutchison aims to repeat the success it had with
mobile phone firm Orange S.A. Hutchison sold its 45% share in Orange
to German phone company Mannesman for £14.6 billion three years
ago.
Hutchison spokeswoman Laura Cheung said, "If the market is right,
and the timing is right, there's always the possibility."
Hutchison holds 3G licenses in a few European countries including
the UK, Italy, Ireland and Sweden.
The operator launched 3G trials this month in both Italy and the
UK offering high speed internet access and multimedia services.
Three Hutchison outlets will be launched next month in the UK, allowing
the public to see 3G services and handsets, and customers will be
able to place handset orders.
They will be the first in Europe to rollout 3G services in November.
