NetCom asks for two-year extension
October 24, 2002
According to sources, Norwegian cellular operator NetCom has asked
the Norwegian telecom authorities for a two year extension to its
rollout of 3G services.
The deadline under the originally terms of the Norwegian 3G license
was December 1, 2003, but NetCom wants the deadline to be delayed
to December 1, 2005.
The operator put forward the lack of 3G handsets as the reason
why the delay is needed. They said 3G mobile handsets won't be available
in Europe before summer 29003 at the earliest and that the standards
have not yet been finalized.
NetCom plans to invest between EUR 404 million to EUR 539 million
to build its 3G network. The Norwegian operator, a unit of Sweden's
Telia, paid $11.2 million for the 3G license in October 2000.
This has been a familiar picture in Europe and in Asia where operators
have difficulties in meeting 3G rollout deadlines. Many blame the
lack of 3G handsets and uncertainty over 3G technologies.
