SK Teletech Wins Contract to Supply 1 Million Handsets to China
Unicom
October 27, 2002
SK Teletech announced that it has signed an MOU to supply one million
CDMA2000 1X mobile handsets to China Unicom until March 2003. This
deal marks the biggest export of a single item to China for a Korean
company.
According to SK Teletech, the contract was a result of SK Group’s
years of investment in China. The company said it expects to win
additional orders that go beyond March 2003.
The handset to be exported to China is SKY IM-5000, SK Teletech’s
latest model, which features 65,000 color tones, 40 polyphony ring
tones and a digital camera. For subsequent orders, the company plans
to make modifications to the model to fit the Chinese market’s taste.
“Even though it’s premature to compare SK Teletech to the leading
handset manufacturers in the world, it has built up a solid technological
base in the domestic market with the success of SKY models and has
maintained a reputation for producing upscale handsets,” said marketing
director Min-seung Yoon.
The handsets will be distributed through a local affiliate of China
Unicom. SK Teletech will be responsible for product development
and production, while the affiliate will be in charge of sales and
A/S.
