DoCoMo to halt overseas investment
October 30, 2002
NTT DoCoMo said it may suspend overseas investment as many overseas
mobile operators are delaying their roll out of 3G mobile services.
The move came after an Asahi Shimbun report that concluded the
Japanese operator should stop further investment in same sector
companies until the worldwide telecom industry has recovered. The
report suggested that DoCoMo should focus on promoting its i-mode
service.
NTT DoCoMo had launched its 3G service (FOMA) in October 2001 but
the number of subscribers has been disappointing, only attracting
around 136,000 customers. Even with services such as sending pictures,
downloading music and faster Internet access, NTT DoCoMo have lowered
their subscription target.
The reason was partly due to the lack of coverage of its network
and the short battery life of the FOMA handsets. Many experts believe
NTT DoCoMo had launched its FOMA too quickly with only a small coverage
area while the technology is still not matured enough.
Their rival mobile operator, KDDI, has more than 2.65 million customers
to its cdma2000 3G mobile service.
