Hutchison Telecommunications launch on track
October 30, 2002
Australian cellular operator Hutchison Telecommunications has said
they are on schedule to launch their 3G technology in Australia
next year. The news comes after a newspaper reported that Hutchison
3G in the UK may delay the launch of their 3G mobile services.
Hutchison 3G have began 3G trials in both the UK and Italy last
month with 1000 selected users. The operator has said they will
not have a big bang approach and will launch their 3G services in
gradual phases. They still expect the 100,000 handsets they have
ordered from NEC to arrive before the end of the year.
In Britain, Hutchison 3G are fine tuning their services and networks
and would only have a commercial launch when it is ready.
Hutchison of Australia, which paid around $96 million for the 3G
license, have warned against assuming a delay in Britain will mean
a rollout delay in Australia. There has been rumours in the pass
that Hutchison would use a more selective approach to their 3G launch
and markets such as Australia could be deferred.
