Long Wait for 3G in Ireland
October 1, 2003
Despite the start of 3G trials earlier this week, Hong Kong operator
Hutchison is unlikely to offer a full commercial third generation mobile
service in Ireland until the end of next year, the Irish Times reports.
The operator said its launch plans had been put back to late 2004 due
to limited network coverage and a shortage of handsets. However, a company
spokesman said a limited service may be up and running in the Dublin area
within the next six months.
Hutchison holds the only ‘A’ licence in Ireland, which requires it to
roll out 3G services to at least 80% of the population by 2008. Rivals
Vodafone and O2 both opted for the higher priced ‘B’ concession, which
covers only the five largest cities. Orange had also be in the running
for a 3G licence but decided in the end not to bid.
Vodafone, which has signed up Nokia for its 3G network rollout, has started
an Irish 3G trial among a number of business users but has given no commercial
launch date. O2 is planning to start trials in early 2004, with service
launch scheduled for late 2004 at the earliest.
