Vodafone KK likely to miss 3G subscriber target
October 3, 2003
Vodafone KK, formerly known as J-Phone and the Japanese subsidiary of
Vodafone, said the target of one million subscribers by next March for
its 3G service will unlikely to be reached.
"At the moment, it is getting difficult to achieve it. But one million
remains an important milestone. To get there, we will be expanding the
network coverage," Vodafone KK's President Darryl Green told reporters
in Japanese.
Limited service coverage and a lack of handset varieties have hindered
the company's 3G venture. So far they have only signed up 85,500 subscribers
between its launch date of December 2002 and September 2003.
Vodafone KK is planning to launch two new phones, a Sanyo 3G handset
in November followed by another model developed by Sharp to win more customers.
In additional it will also cut data charges in December.
Meanwhile, rivals NTT DoCoMo announced on Wednesday that the number of
subscribers to its 3G FOMA service has passed the 1 million mark. The
service, which was launched two years ago, is using the same 3G technology,
WCDMA, as Vodafone KK. DoCoMo suffered similar problems to Vodafone KK
when they began their 3G service: small coverage area and bulky phones
with short battery life.
