Vodafone and Telstra in 3G partnership rumour

Further speculations suggested that Vodafone Australia would select rival mobile operator Telstra as its partner to build a joint 3G network in Australia. The rumour was started when Vodafone said that it wanted just one network equipment supplier in the Pacific region.

Vodafone Australia managing director Grahame Maher said on Friday the company has began the process of choosing its 3G vendor but the process would result in a single supplier for the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Sweden's Ericsson is the preferred supplier for Vodafone in Australia while the company has also worked with Ericsson in New Zealand. Telstra had selected Ericsson for its 2G mobile network in rural areas and therefore market analysts hypothesised that Vodafone would choose Telstra as its 3G partner.

Mr Maher also said Vodafone is expecting to make decisions on its 3G future in Australia by next month.
