Taiwan 3G service comes down in price

October 6, 2003

Taiwanese mobile operator Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless Communication (APBW) announced plans at the end of last week to reduce the price of 3G mobile services by up to 41%. The move is an attempt to sign-up more subscribers to its 3G service and to attain its goal of 710,000 customers by year end.

Subscribers signing a new two year contract can purchase the SK Teletech AP-1000 3G phone for NT$8,500 (about US$250), 37-41% cheaper than previous contracts, or the Samsung Electronics X789 for NT$15,800, a 23-27% reduction.

The reduction in price brings the cost of 3G services to similar levels as 2G services in the country. APBW said they are still on track to reach its target of 710,000 subscribers.

APBW launched its 3G CDMA2000 1x service in August of this year. The company paid NT$10.6 billion (US$302.8 million) for its license back in February 2002, the highest amount paid among the five license holders.
