UK operators begin Christmas battle

October 7, 2003

Gaming on O2

With the Christmas almost round the corner, consumers can look forward to exciting packages and services this Christmas with 3UK and mmO2 leading the way. 3UK launched two new tariffs at the beginning of this month, VideoTalk 100 and Football 500 aiming at different types of users. The VideoTalk 100 package costing £15 a month and includes 100 minutes to any network at anytime is suitable for users who makes occasional calls and those who wants to join 3UK at a low cost.

The Football 500 tariff is aimed at football fanatics on the move. Fans can keep up with the latest action through 3 with unlimited access to 3's football content including the Premiership and Champions League. This £30 a month plan may not be within most people's budget range although it does include 500 minutes of inclusive calls.

3UK also released four add-on services to suit customers' needs. Existing customers can also get unlimited football access with a Football add-on service costing £5 a month. The three other add-ons are unlimited access to entertainment services for £5 a month, unlimited content access for £10 a month and 75 text messages for £5 a month.

Even with the new changes, 3UK would be hard pressed to reach its intended target of 1 million customers by year end. The firm did not comment on weather they would reach this target. mmO2's latest additional may sway consumers from moving to 3UK. So far, 3UK is the only mobile operator in the UK to offer videoclips for download, but from now on mmO2 customers can also download video content including exclusive Rugby World Cup videoclips.

The service makes use of O2's 2.5 network and takes around 30 to 90 seconds to download a clip depending on its length. Currently, only the Nokia 3650 and the SonyEricsson P800 can make use of the service. Other handsets compatible with the service will be available before Christmas including Xda II, Nokia 6600, Siemens SX1, Motorola V600 and Sony Ericsson P900.

There is a further incentive to use the service as it will be free until 31st 2004. ITN, CNBC Europe, Classic Comedy, Bake, Fashion TV, GMTV, Extreme Sports Channel and Extreme International are only some of the content providers.

Kent Thexton, chief marketing and data officer of mmO2, said, "Mobile video is a natural extension to our mobile entertainment services such as games and music. We aim to provide a range of compelling content for our target audience - the exclusive RWC content being a case in point. We focus on making it really easy for customers to access our services, and therefore are making this possible over existing networks and with existing handsets.

The biggest mobile operator in the UK, Vodafone, has no plans to match both 3UK and mmO2's Christmas strategies.

Meanwhile, mmO2 told 3GNewsroom.com they are expecting to launch 3G services in the UK in the second half of next year. The company is planning trials in Germany before the end of the year and will most probably begin trials in the UK early next year.
