KDDI to offer new service

October 8, 2003

Japan's KDDI said it plans to offer a new 3G, pedestrian-oriented navigation service in late October and five new cdma2000 1x 3G mobile handset models compatible with the service.

The new service, called "EZ Navi Walk," will use GPS technology to provide more advanced features, such as real-time pinpointing of one's location, than KDDI's existing GPS service.

Other functions of the new 3G service include voice-guided navigation to designated locations and re-routing for subscribers who lose their way on specified routes.

Japan's second-largest cellular operator said it intends to charge a basic monthly fee of Yen210 or Yen315, depending on the level of service the subscriber chooses. Other fees such as data transmission charges are separate.

To enable its subscribers to access the new service, Japan's second-largest cellular operator will also release five new handset models made by Casio, Kyocera, Sanyo Electric, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba.
